The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has advised changes to statistical codes in the Customs Tariff Working pages, from 1 January 2015, for tariff subheadings 7227.90.90, 7228.70.00, 7308.90.00, 7312.10.00 and 7312.90.00.
The duty rates applying to certain TCF goods in chapters 39, 40, 42, 58, 60, 61, 62, 63 and 96 of Schedule 3 in the Customs Tariff will phase from 10% to 5% on 1 January 2015. The Developing Country rates for these goods will phase from 5% to Free.

Phasing duty rates listed in Schedules 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the Customs Tariff will also take effect on 1 January 2015.

Trade and Investment Minister Andrew Robb has announced that Australia's Free Trade Agreement with South Korea will enter into force on 12 December 2014.

Information regarding the Agreement including 'Instructions and Guidelines' is available on the ACBPS website at:

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE - NEW ILLEGAL LOGGING LAWS NOW APPLY

As of 30 November 2014, importers of certain timber and timber products (including specific wood products, pulp, paper and furniture products) need to undertake due diligence and, if necessary, mitigate the risk the products they are importing has been illegally logged. INCREASE IN FUEL DUTY RATES FROM 10 NOVEMBER 2014 AND BIANNUAL CPI IND

On 30 October 2014, the Government announced the re-introduction of indexation to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of the excise and excise-equivalent customs duty on certain locally manufactured and imported fuels.
From 10 November 2014 the rate of excise and excise-equivalent customs duty for fuels (excluding aviation fuels) will be as follows:
- $0.386 per litre for liquid fuels
- $0.101 per litre for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
- $0.212 per kilogram for compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

After the initial increase in fuel duty rates on 10 November 2014 indexation will take place on 1 February and 1 August each year in line with the CPI. The indexed rates will be rounded to three decimal places of a dollar.

PROPOSED CHANGES TO CUSTOMS TARIFF IMPORT STATISTICAL CODES

The ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) is undertaking a feasibility study into the creation of specific new Customs Tariff statistical codes under subheadings 7227.90.90, 7228.70.00, 7308.90.00, 7312.10.00 and 7312.90.00. If the feasibility study leads to the creation of new statistical codes, they will be implemented on 1 January 2015. Korea - Australia Free Trade Agreement

Invitation to an information session on the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement (KAFTA)

 

The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS) is hosting information sessions on how to access preferential tariff treatment under the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement (KAFTA). This includes information on how to identify the relevant tariff commitment and rules of origin for the goods imported.

The sessions will provide an overview of the rules of origin chapters of KAFTA. The session will complement the ACBPS Instruction and Guidelines and Australian Customs Notice (ACN) that will become available once the agreement enters into force.

 

The information sessions are CPD Accredited for licensed customs brokers (three points in the Professional Brokerage Skills stream). Each session is scheduled for three hours, from 9 am to 12 noon. We anticipate that the presentation will take approximately two hours, with the remainder of the session dedicated to questions and answers. There is no charge for the session.
